Applying for jobs in the NHS

Ideally, there would be one portal that would allow you to apply for jobs anywhere in the NHS, unfortunately this is not the case. Read on to see what your options are.

Applying for a training post

Foundation Programme / Core Training / Speciality Training / Residency

Recruitment to training programmes throughout the UK takes place through a platform called Oriel

All recruitment runs to a strict timetable. You should search for the timetable for your chosen speciality and training grade to ensure you meet the appropriate deadlines.

Applying for a non training role

Locally employed doctor / Clinical Fellow / Consultant / Trust Grade roles / Speciality Doctor / Staff Grade

Recruitment to these posts is not coordinated on a national level. In practice, many jobs are advertised on an ad-hoc basis when the need arises - for example if someone moves on to another job, a service need is identified, there is a gap due to maternity leave etc. Gaps often open up as training grade doctors rotate through posts, so there is often a steady stream of adverts throughout the year. See below for details of where to search for jobs in each UK nation.

I would suggest that you setup a search on the website relevant to the region you wish to work in. Beware that not all advertisements will be written the same way - the same role may be advertised as a Clinical Fellow by one Trust and a Speciality Doctor by another. Therefore, keep your search terms broad or set up multiple searches to ensure you do not miss out on job advertisements.
